We have to face the startling fact that, where there are no bras, there is little or no breast cancer.

A carefully monitored retroactive study found the following: Women who wore a bra 24 hours a day had a 3 out of 4 chance of developing breast cancer. Women who wore a bra more than 12 hour a day but not to bed had a 1 out of 7 risk. Women who wore a bra less than 12 hours a day had a 1 out of 152 risk. Women who wore bras rarely or never had a 1 out of 168 chance of getting breast cancer. The problem with bras, or any restrictive clothing for that matter, is that they block the circulation of the lymph system. At the end of the day, take off your clothes and look in the mirror. If your bra, camisole, or any other clothing has left a line on your body, it is blocking off the circulation of your lymph system.
The lymph system is an important part of the body's purification system. If the tissue of the breasts is constricted due to a close fitting garment, the toxins in the lymph system of this area are not allowed to drain properly. As a result of the inadequate drainage, each day more and more toxins build up in the area.

What to Look Out For in an Everyday Bra

Forget the bra burning movement by the women's lib decades ago. Those women who burned their bras then and have since refused to wear bras, probably have saggy breasts today. It is akin to cutting off your nose to spite your face. If you have breasts, wear a bra to support them. Period.

Bras-Bra care instructions- Extend the life of your bras! Always follow the manufacturers recommendations on caring for your bras. The following general information will assist you in extending the life of your bras.

Always follow the instructions on the manufacturer's bra label.

If manufacture labels are not present, always wash bras carefully by hand. Always use cold water and a light gentle hand soap or very mild detergent on the bra.

Drip dry bras or dry on a flat surface if possible.

Do not machine wash your bras! If you must wash your bras in a washer: Use a delicate cycle in cold water only, and separate the colors when washing your bras. Fasten all hooks and place bras in a (Wash) lingerie bag if possible.

Do not put bras in the dryer! If you must, tumble dry on a low setting with bras still in the lingerie bag.

Wash bras at least every other wearing to reduce discoloration and damage from body oils.

Do not overwear your bra. The bra will loose the form and structure.

Unless you know your proper bra size, you could be wearing the wrong undergarment. This can be more than just a mild discomfort: bras that are too tight or loose can lead to serious injuries to your neck and back. They can also cause numbness in your hands and fingers. Trying to work with the wrong bra will only leave you in physical pain. When you find a bra that fits correctly, you’ll feel – and look – better.

All the letters and numbers on bras might seem confusing. What’s the difference between A and AA? Are DD and E the same bra, but with different letters? The process is actually easy once you understand what the numbers mean. Fortunately, there’s a fast and simple way to decipher the “code” of the bra industry. Grab a cloth measuring tape – usually the type that a seamstress or tailor will use – and start measuring.

Step One:

Wrap the tape around the area just beneath your breasts. You should pull the tape so that it is snug, but not too tight. Now, subtract five from your measurement. This number is your band size; remember that for later.

Step Two:

Move the tape upward so that it covers the fullest part of your bust. Make sure that the tape is a little loose around your body. Check out your measurement. If you get an odd number, round up. Now, subtract from your band size number.

Step Three:

Now you have your cup size. Your number corresponds to the bra industry’s sizes like this:

A Radical New Way to Find Your Bra Size

I am going to go out on a limb here, and tell you that bras sizes and bra sizing is a sham.

You've surely all read instructions on how to find your bra size, and for completeness sake, here is what is generally agreed upon (For US sizing):

Hint: It helps to have a friend or husband do this with you.

Put on your most comfortable bra.

With a tape measure, measure the distance around your chest directly under the breasts. Let's assume, you measure 34"

Next, do some math:

If the number is less than 33", add 5" (It's not)

If the number is greater than 33", add 3" (34" + 3" = 37")

If you end up with an odd number, add one additional inch (37" + 1" = 38")

This number is your band size. Write it down or remember it (38 = Band Size)

Next, wrap the tape measure around the fullest part of the bust. This is your bust measurement. (Let's say it's 41")

Next, do some more math

Subtract your band size from your bust measurement. (41" - 38" = 3")

The number that remains is used to determine your US cup size. See the following chart:

If... Your Cup Size is...

Band Size - Bust Measurement = 1/2" AA

Band Size - Bust Measurement = 1" A

Band Size - Bust Measurement = 2" B

Band Size - Bust Measurement = 3" C

Band Size - Bust Measurement = 4" D

Band Size - Bust Measurement = 5" E (DD)

Band Size - Bust Measurement = 6" F (DDD)

Band Size - Bust Measurement = 7" G (DDDD)

According to the chart, you are a 38C.

Congratulations, you now have the skills to pick out the wrong bra size 85% of the time!

Yes, it's (apparently) true. 85% of women wear the wrong bra size...Do you?

Here's how to find the perfect fit, and become part of that 15% wearing the right bra size...

You know your "size", so you should find a few bras in styles that you like. However, you should also pick up the same styles in their sister sizes.

Sister Sizes: An explanation.

Sister sizes are bras that have the same cup size, but a different band size. In the case of the 38C, the sister sizes are 36D and 40B.

Many women don't known this, and simply go up or down a band size without looking at a different cup size. If you think the bra is too tight, you'll be inclined to go up to a 40C, rather than the correct size of a 40B. If you think it's too loose, you'll go down to a 36C.

This is probably a big reason why 85% of women are wearing the wrong size!

Here's the trick, If your band size goes up, your cup size goes down. As your band size goes down, your cup size goes up.

Here comes the next problem: What if despite trying on various sizes, the bra still doesn't seem to fit right?

You have to move on to a different bra style. Here are some ideas:

If you have a wider breast that protrudes from the chest less: Try a soft cup style.

If you have a narrow breast that protrudes from the chest more: Try a minimizer or full coverage bra

If your breast doesn't fill the cup: Try a soft cup, a non-molded cup, a demi cup bra, a padded bra, or go down a cup size.

If your breast is too large for the cup: Try a full coverage, a soft-cup, a minimizer style, or move up a cup size.

If you have non-symetrical breasts (Different sized breasts): Try going down a cup size, or a half cup size, if you can find a half cup sized bra. This is very common, by the way.

After doing all of this work, you should be able to find a perfect fitting bra.

Here are some recommendations: First of all, visit a larger department store or a shop that specializes in bras. Next, you'll want to take some time to try them on--You don't rush when you buy shoes, nor should you rush when you buy a bra. When you try one on, pay close attention to anything that rubs or pinches, even if it only does a little--just imagine how annoying it will be over the course of a day. Make sure you're trying out a few different brands. Just like shoes, bra sizes fit differently based on who makes them. Get rid of all of your biases, let the measurements do the talking. Lastly, when you find a bra that you like that fits, remember it! You'll likely want to buy it again in the future.

Get Professional Help

Sagging straps, loose band, cups too tight and overflowing - it's so easy to go wrong. If you have never been fitted professionally, now is the time.

If you have been fitted, but your weight has changed in the last year, guess what? Your cup and band sizes have fluctuated and you need to be fitted again!

It should go without saying, but needs to be said anyway, if you are pregnant or just had a baby, your bra size is going to be completely different and you'll need to go shopping for a new bra or two.

Statistics show that over 70% of women aren't wearing the right size bra. Getting the right fitting bra isn't difficult. Most lingerie stores or departments now train their staff in proper bra fittings, if you're not sure, then make sure you go to one that's been recommended by a friend.

The salesperson will measure your ribcage and your chest - overtop of the bra you're wearing - and with a quick calculation, determine your band and cup size. Ask her to help you pick out a selection of styles with you, telling her what your needs and preferences are. She should load you up with an armful of models and a few sizes, and once you've tried them on, you'll have a much better idea of what fits and what doesn't.

Finding the Correct Bra Size

Don't be anxious if your size changes, it's perfectly normal. No one cares what your bra size is except you.

Trying to fit into an old bra size will only make you frustrated and the wrong size is very unflattering. So, when it's time to throw them out because they no longer fit, just be ruthless and do it!

To measure yourself, take a soft tape measure (most sewing kits have them) and while wearing your best-fitting bra, measure your body circumference around your upper ribcage, just under your breasts.

Do this in front of a mirror to make sure the tape is straight, and not too tight or loose. This is your BAND SIZE. If the measurement is not an even number, add one inch, and that is your band size.

Then measure yourself around the largest part of your chest. Again, make sure the tape is not loose or pulling too tightly, just firmly in place. Subtract your BAND SIZE from this measurement, and the difference determines your CUP SIZE. For every inch, your cup size goes up.

1 inch = A; 2 inches = B; 3 inches = C; 4 inches = D; 5 inches = DD; 6 inches = DDD; 7 inches = F, etc.

For example: if your band size is 38. Your chest measurement is 42. The difference is 4, so your cup size is "D". (Letter codes do vary from the US to the UK and Europe, but each level is a one-inch increase.)

If your breasts are not the same size, remember to fit the cup size to the bigger breast, not the other way round. If necessary, add a little padding to the other, most lingerie stores sell these inserts under a few different names; "cutlets" is a fairly common name for them.

A tip when bra shopping is to bring along a favorite tight t-shirt, and put in on over each new bra to see how it makes your clothes look. You should see an uplifted, smooth silhouette that doesn't bulge or pucker in the cups.

Take a friend along or ask a shop assistant to look for bulges or bra lines at the back too.
