How To Buy a Bra That Fits

Uncomfortable bras can ruin your whole day. They pinch, they squeeze, they ride up, and they don't look good. But unless you're planning to go braless, you're going to need to learn how to buy a bra that fits. Here are some tips to bra buying so that you, too, can feel better in your lingerie!

1. Get ready. Measuring is easier if you are braless and have someone help you, but if you are modest, wear your best-fitting unpadded bra. You can measure on your own but it is much more difficult. Always use a soft measuring tape.

2. Measure your "band size." Using this soft measuring tape, measure around the rib cage, right under the bust. The measuring tape should be at the same point on your back as your lower bra band. Make sure that the measuring tape is not slack or twisted. Next, add five inches to the measurement (to the nearest inch) around your rib cage. This is your band size. For example, a 31-inch measurement becomes a 36-inch band size. If you get an even number, you are more likely to fit the higher size band, but you may wish to try the lower size band also.

3. Measure your "cup size." Now, use the soft tape measure to measure around your bust at the fullest point. Don't pull the measuring tape too tight, but don't let it become slack either. The difference between this bust measurement and the band size is the cup size.

4. Adjust your cup size from numbers to letters. The difference between your band size and your bust measurement determines your cup size.

* If the difference is less than one inch, you wear an AA cup.

* If the difference is one inch, you wear an A cup.

* If the difference is two inches, you wear a B cup.

* If the difference is three inches, you wear a C cup.

* If the difference is four inches, you wear a D cup

* If the difference is five inches, you wear a DD or E cup.

5. Check this size with actual bras. Now you have your ideal bra size - but we all know that we do not live in an ideal world, even where bras are concerned. Bras and bodies both vary, even within a given size. Use the measurements you got as a starting point, and adjust up or down as needed.

6. Think about underwire. Some women hate underwire and some love it. Generally, underwire bras provide better support, but this depends on the brand and style of the bra.

7. Consider padding. There are various levels of padding, from bras with almost none to bras that are almost all padding. Try a few different styles, including lightly padded, which is a popular choice, and see which style looks best under your clothing, as well as which feels most comfortable.

Maternity is nature’s gift to women. The experience of nursing your baby can be increased if you ensure your own comfort level. Your breasts start changing shape from the fourth month of pregnancy. As a result, most women find their previous bra too small.

Purchase a nursing bras close to your due date or shortly after your baby arrives, because your breasts will grow larger toward the end of your pregnancy and when milk comes in.

You can purchase nursing bras in the maternity section of any department store. When purchasing a nursing bra, keep in mind that it is best to shop for one that has wide, comfortable shoulder straps to give adequate support to the breasts. Consider buying a bra that has flaps and can be opened and refastened easily. Since milk leakage is inevitable, it also makes sense to buy nursing pads to protect both your bra and clothes.

Make sure you get the right size. Though good looks are an added bonus, your primary consideration should be access and comfort. Even though you may find bras with underwires tempting, they can constrict the ducts and obstruct the flow of milk. This, in turn, can cause infections.

It is always better to buy 100% cotton bras, as cotton is a breathable fabric. Synthetic fabrics trap moisture and encourage bacterial growth and soreness.

Along with quality, pay attention to the quantity also. You should buy more than one nursing bras to avoid washing the same pieces again and again. As the breast size keeps changing, you should replace your nursing bras regularly to be sure you're getting the support you need while breast- feeding.

The Bra and Health Risks

We have to face the startling fact that, where there are no bras, there is little or no breast cancer.

A carefully monitored retroactive study found the following: Women who wore a bra 24 hours a day had a 3 out of 4 chance of developing breast cancer. Women who wore a bra more than 12 hour a day but not to bed had a 1 out of 7 risk. Women who wore a bra less than 12 hours a day

had a 1 out of 152 risk. Women who wore bras rarely or never had a 1 out of 168 chance of getting breast cancer. (Sydney Ross Singer and Soma Grismaijer, Dressed to Kill, Garden City Park, New York, Avery Publishing Group, 1995, pp. 110-126).

The problem with bras, or any restrictive clothing for that matter, is that they block the circulation of the lymph system. At the end of the day, take off your clothes and look in the mirror. If your bra, camisole, or any other clothing has left a line on your body, it is blocking off the circulation of your lymph system.

The lymph system is an important part of the body's purification system. If the tissue of the breasts is constricted due to a close fitting garment, the toxins in the lymph system of this area are not allowed to drain properly. As a result of the inadequate drainage, each day more and

more toxins build up in the area.

In the same study connecting bras and breast cancer, women wearing bras that were dangerously tight or restrictive were asked if their bras were comfortable. Many said they were!

Throughout history, women have become accustomed to a variety of clothing that was detrimental to ourhealth. We would never dream of returning to the corset or bound feet. It is time for the bra to become history, as well.
