If the bra you're wearing now is not a comfortable bra, the problem could be that you don't have the proper cup size. What is the correct cup size for you? That depends on a lot of variables.

In case you didn't know, cup sizes vary depending on the band size. For instance, the cup size of a 34DDD is smaller than the cup size for a 40DDD. They're both DDD cups, yet the 40 is bigger than the 34.

I've been doing bra fittings since 1971, and I've found that most of the women who come to me to find out the correct way to measure for a bra are wearing a bra that's 3 or 4 BAND sizes off, AND 3 or 4 CUP sizes off. In short, they're way, way, way, way, WAY off. Even if a woman has properly gauged her cup size, because her band size is off so much, the result is a cup size that looks right on paper, but on the woman it ends up being too small or too big. The result is a bra that makes your clothes fit poorly, a bra that makes your body feel poorly, and a bra that makes you look fatter than you really are.

What about an under wire bra? Many women hate bras with an under wire in the cups because the under wire jabs them right in the boobs, the most tender part of our bodies. If you're one of these women, I can guarantee you that the only reason you hate an under wire bra is because you've never worn an under wire bra that was the right size bra for you. Remember, it's called an under wire bra, it's not called a jab your boob bra. An under wire is supposed to be an improvement.
If you have the right bra cup size, the under wire will maintain the cup's shape over a long period of time, but the wire itself won't poke you because it's going around your boob, not into it. That's what an under wire is designed to do, fit around your boobs, maintain the cup's shape, and give added support for your boobs. Saying you hate an under wire bra because it's jabbing your boobs is like saying you hate ketchup because it ruins your coffee. If you use the product the way it was designed to be used, you'll get good results.

We have to face the startling fact that, where there are no bras, there is little or no breast cancer.

A carefully monitored retroactive study found the following: Women who wore a bra 24 hours a day had a 3 out of 4 chance of developing breast cancer. Women who wore a bra more than 12 hour a day but not to bed had a 1 out of 7 risk. Women who wore a bra less than 12 hours a day had a 1 out of 152 risk. Women who wore bras rarely or never had a 1 out of 168 chance of getting breast cancer. The problem with bras, or any restrictive clothing for that matter, is that they block the circulation of the lymph system. At the end of the day, take off your clothes and look in the mirror. If your bra, camisole, or any other clothing has left a line on your body, it is blocking off the circulation of your lymph system.
The lymph system is an important part of the body's purification system. If the tissue of the breasts is constricted due to a close fitting garment, the toxins in the lymph system of this area are not allowed to drain properly. As a result of the inadequate drainage, each day more and more toxins build up in the area.

In the same study connecting bras and breast cancer, women wearing bras that were dangerously tight or restrictive were asked if their bras were comfortable. Many said they were!

Add 5 to your Frame size. If the number you get is odd, round up to the next even number.

If your bra still doesn't feel right, the best thing to is to try on different brands, and vary the size a bit. Make sure the bra strap doesn't cut into your shoulders, and make sure your breasts don't hang out of the bottom, or sides of the bra. The best rule is, if it just doesn't feel right, try another bra.

Bra sizes can vary a lot depending on the type of bra, and even the brand. The best thing to do is go into the changing room, and try on a number of different bras.

Wash bras at least every other wearing to reduce discoloration and damage from body oils.

Wear bras in rotation. If you find a bra that you love, buy several bras the same size. Bra manufacturers frequently discontinue styles.

Do not overwear your bra. The bra will loose the form and structure.

Signs of an overworn bra include: wrinkles in bra cup, rides up back, or slips off the shoulders.

Replace bras at least every two years.

Last time that you had tossed your bra in a washing machine the underwire came out! Now you wouldn't want that, right? Nor would you want your inner wears to get rough or your silk negligee lose color. At the same time, most of us do not have the time to take special care of the delicates or hand-wash those either. Here are some easy care tips especially meant for your delicates.

• First and foremost, do not forget to look at the care instructions for each lingerie or delicate. Most manufacturers specify exactly what to do and which cleaning procedure to avoid.

• If you follow the delicate cycle specified in most modern-day cleaners and dryers, you will be good to go. These cycles generally use cold water and easier drying cycles. Remember to use detergent meant for woolens and delicate clothes. Do not use bleach!

• Another way is putting all your lingerie is a lingerie bag and then adding it to the regular load. These bags are generally net bags which help drain the detergent and water from your lingerie and at the same time ensures that the delicates are not directly thrown into the ruthless washing cycles of twisting and turning. You can keep the washed lingerie in the same bag while putting it back into the dryer.

• Another way of cleaning your lingerie is using your washing machine as a bucket. Fill it up with cold water and detergent and soak in your lingerie in it. Keep it for half an hour. Now drain out the soapy water and fill in with clean water. Soak in the soapy lingerie in it. Drain water when cleaned and then dry by hanging out the lingerie separately.

• Drying your lingerie correctly is also very important. If possible let those dry naturally instead of a dryer. If you hang those in hangers and leave those on your shower rod while leaving for office, when you come back, those would be dry and ready for wear. That way you can save the excess heat associated with most dryers that may cause permanent damage to your satin or chiffon innerwear.

• Drycleaning becomes necessary for some sort of materials. Often silk and satin wears come with manufacturer's note of dry cleaning only. Yes we all know that dry cleaning is expensive and also requires you to drop in your inner wear with people you do not know! These days many dry cleaning agents are available in the market that can be used at home. Try one of those. If you follow the instructions, these are pretty easy to use.

• Storage is also very important when it comes to taking care of your delicates. Wrap these in soft paper and store those at the top. Do not add load on top of your lingerie stack. Remember to hang negligees, baby dolls or delicate chemise and camisoles. Otherwise the delicate wear may lose shape.

You can get hold of a bra that fits your bust size perfectly only after you find out your bust measurements correctly. Wrong bra sizes, whether they are tight or loose, have serious outcomes which may even mean back and neck injuries. It's not just about discomfort when you choose the wrong bra size; it's about looking awkward as it makes your body look strange. Wearing a properly fitted bra can only mean two things- better looks and more comfort.

Step 1:

Measure your body from right where your breast ends and your waist begins. The tape should be snug but make sure it's not too tight to distort measurements. What ever readings you have simply subtract 5 from them. This way you get a band size which we will discuss later on.

Step 2:

Now measure your bust where it is fullest. At this point the tape should be comfortably lined with your body's round and not be too tight. If the reading you get is odd, then round it. Now take your band size and subtract this new measurement from it.

Step 3:

This will give you the size of your cups. You can read your measurement against the company sizes in this way:

AA= 1" and lesser

A= 1"

B= 2"

C= 3"

D= 4"

E /DD= 5"

F/DDD=6"

If you are searching for the perfect bra then taking measurements are just a part of the process. When buying yourself a bra, the center of the bra should touch your body and not stay raised. Also ensure that your straps are not the only things that hold your bust in position. It can exert pressure on your back and the bra will lose its shape quickly.

Are you wearing the right bra size?

If your band is tight or your back straps slip up then it means your cups are small. If your band is tighter than being comfortable then your current band size is larger than the bra band that you are wearing.

Your cups should not have empty space in them. If they do then you need a smaller cup size. If you feel that your current cups are too tight then you need a different bra.

If your bras underwire presses in too deeply then you need to get larger cups. This may also happen when the bra's side wings are smaller than what they should be.

Measuring correctly

The main measurements that you will need are full bust, upper bust and under bust.

Under bust: take measurements from beneath your bust. Hold your measuring tape in position beneath the bust and make sure it isn't too tight.

Upper bust: place the measuring tape under your arms but over your bust.

Full bust: measure from where you feel your breast is fullest.

Now subtract both measurements from each other and see what the figure you get is. If you get a figure more than 2" then your band size is calculated by adding 2 or 3 inches to this measurement and getting an even figure. If the difference turns out to be lesser than 2" then it is your band size.

Subtracting the figure you get out of measuring your full bust from that of the upper bust is what determines your cup size. Here are the sizes you should use as your readings:

AA<1">

A=1"

B=2"

C=3"

D=4"

DD=5"

Styles of bras

Bras come in a variety of shapes and designs. So make sure you wear them to see if they fit your body shape and type. Not every convertible bra is meant for everyone. Choose what goes with your shape.

Full coverage bras cover the breast completely and give added support.

Demi cup bras only give 75 % coverage to the bust. These kinds of bras enhance cleavage appearance but you need to see that they don't cut your bust from the center and make them appear bulging out of a wrong size. If so, then buy larger cups.

Underwire bras give extra support and roundness.

Halter Top bras: these have a strap that goes around the neck unlike regular bras that have shoulder straps. These can be worn to enhance cleavage and with halter tops.

Backless bras: these bras are meant for dresses with low backs and they, at times, only cover the front or have extremely low back straps.

Strapless: These bras just come with a band and no straps. They stay in position by extending a little lower than a regular bra and this gives extra support.

Padded bras: these enhance cleavage and make the breasts appear larger than what they are. The pads can be made of gel, foam or bra fabric and at times the pads can be removed. Gel padding are gaining a lot of popularity as they appear more close to natural shape.

Décolleté For deeper neck lines these bras are perfect as they have smaller cuts than demi bras and don't show from inside of a deep cut neckline.

Light support: these are without an underwire and can be worn all day. For a breast size that's larger than cup A shouldn't use this style of bras. A bra that fits properly will be comfortable with or without underwire.

Sports bra: these control breast bounce during a sport session and activity. Though some inexpensive bras do this by squeezing the breast tightly into place but comfortable sports bras are those that do this according to cup sizes. They fit the body and hold the breast snugly into position rather than squeezing them.

Nursing bras: nursing mothers need added support for their breasts and so these bras provide complete coverage. They have a snap at the shoulder which makes it easier for the mother to take it off when she has to nurse.

All the letters and numbers on bras might seem confusing. What’s the difference between A and AA? Are DD and E the same bra, but with different letters? Grab a cloth measuring tape – usually the type that a seamstress or tailor will use – and start measuring.

Step One:

Wrap the tape around the area just beneath your breasts. You should pull the tape so that it is snug, but not too tight. Now, subtract five from your measurement. This number is your band size; remember that for later.

Step Two:

A Radical New Way to Find Your Bra Size

I am going to go out on a limb here, and tell you that bras sizes and bra sizing is a sham.

You've surely all read instructions on how to find your bra size, and for completeness sake, here is what is generally agreed upon (For US sizing):

Hint: It helps to have a friend or husband do this with you.

Put on your most comfortable bra.

With a tape measure, measure the distance around your chest directly under the breasts. Let's assume, you measure 34"

Next, do some math:

If the number is less than 33", add 5" (It's not)

If the number is greater than 33", add 3" (34" + 3" = 37")

If you end up with an odd number, add one additional inch (37" + 1" = 38")

This number is your band size. Write it down or remember it (38 = Band Size)

Next, wrap the tape measure around the fullest part of the bust. This is your bust measurement. (Let's say it's 41")

Next, do some more math

Subtract your band size from your bust measurement. (41" - 38" = 3")

The number that remains is used to determine your US cup size. See the following chart:

If... Your Cup Size is...

Band Size - Bust Measurement = 1/2" AA

Band Size - Bust Measurement = 1" A

Band Size - Bust Measurement = 2" B

Band Size - Bust Measurement = 3" C

Band Size - Bust Measurement = 4" D

Yes, it's (apparently) true. 85% of women wear the wrong bra size...Do you?

Here's how to find the perfect fit, and become part of that 15% wearing the right bra size...

You know your "size", so you should find a few bras in styles that you like. However, you should also pick up the same styles in their sister sizes.

Sister Sizes: An explanation.

Sister sizes are bras that have the same cup size, but a different band size. In the case of the 38C, the sister sizes are 36D and 40B.

Many women don't known this, and simply go up or down a band size without looking at a different cup size. If you think the bra is too tight, you'll be inclined to go up to a 40C, rather than the correct size of a 40B. If you think it's too loose, you'll go down to a 36C.

This is probably a big reason why 85% of women are wearing the wrong size!

Here's the trick, If your band size goes up, your cup size goes down. As your band size goes down, your cup size goes up.

Here comes the next problem: What if despite trying on various sizes, the bra still doesn't seem to fit right?

Finding the Correct Bra Size

Don't be anxious if your size changes, it's perfectly normal. No one cares what your bra size is except you.

To measure yourself, take a soft tape measure (most sewing kits have them) and while wearing your best-fitting bra, measure your body circumference around your upper ribcage, just under your breasts.

Do this in front of a mirror to make sure the tape is straight, and not too tight or loose. This is your BAND SIZE. If the measurement is not an even number, add one inch, and that is your band size.

Then measure yourself around the largest part of your chest. Again, make sure the tape is not loose or pulling too tightly, just firmly in place. Subtract your BAND SIZE from this measurement, and the difference determines your CUP SIZE. For every inch, your cup size goes up.

1 inch = A; 2 inches = B; 3 inches = C; 4 inches = D; 5 inches = DD; 6 inches = DDD; 7 inches = F, etc.

For example: if your band size is 38. Your chest measurement is 42. The difference is 4, so your cup size is "D". (Letter codes do vary from the US to the UK and Europe, but each level is a one-inch increase.)

If your breasts are not the same size, remember to fit the cup size to the bigger breast, not the other way round. If necessary, add a little padding to the other, most lingerie stores sell these inserts under a few different names; "cutlets" is a fairly common name for them.

A tip when bra shopping is to bring along a favorite tight t-shirt, and put in on over each new bra to see how it makes your clothes look. You should see an uplifted, smooth silhouette that doesn't bulge or pucker in the cups.

Take a friend along or ask a shop assistant to look for bulges or bra lines at the back too.

Caution: One size fits most is not one size fits all. In the past manufacturers labeled these items one size fits all. Typically, but not always one size fits most means up to 5'6" and up to 145 pounds. The one size fits most is very confusing to most buyers, and must have a substantial spandex content to fit.

When ordering online the word to the wise is: Order from a website that has a toll free number with a live person to speak to. Second order from a site that carries inventory. The vast majority of sites are bedroom enterprises that carry little or no inventory. Third beware of sites that are drop shippers only. At our store we see girls who are buying lingerie for the first time and while it might look to the casual observer to be easy for a girl to buy lingerie, the truth is quite the opposite. It is always important to buy quality if you can afford to buy the best then this may solve some problems in buying lingerie for the first time. The difference in cost can and should result in more attention to detail, finer materials and the garment lasting longer. Don't fall prey to the idea though that you have to pay more to get the best quality. Also don't fail to shop at sales and clearance times for the best value for your money.

Service: Even though you may pay more it is always best to shop in a full service store or boutique particularly when buying lingerie for the first time. The cost of goods and the amount of service you receive usually go hand in hand. Buying lingerie or anything else for the first time should result in more questions about fit, material and what to look for in a quality garment. Sales people in a high end store often, not always can assist you with any questions you may have. Even if you don't buy anything you may learn about what you are buying and what to look for? You can pay too much for lingerie considering the use it will get.
